Kindle Direct Publishing

What you can and cannot automate on Kindle Direct Publishing

Publishers with large KDP catalogues often ask for an API. KDP does not offer a public one for publishing titles. There is still a lot that can be automated safely around it.

What KDP does not offer

Titles, metadata, prices and files are managed through the KDP website. Tools that log in and click through it on your behalf risk breaching the KDP terms and putting the account at risk. We do not build them, and you should be wary of any service that does.

What you can automate

  • Manuscript pipelines: build EPUB and print-ready PDF files from one source (for example Markdown or Word styles), with consistent styling.
  • Pre-upload checks: page count, trim size, bleed, image resolution, broken links and table of contents.
  • A metadata master: titles, subtitles, descriptions, keywords, categories and series data in one system, exported in the format your team pastes or uploads.
  • Price planning across marketplaces and currencies, with rules for promotions.

Sales and royalty reporting

KDP reports can be downloaded as spreadsheets covering sales, Kindle Unlimited pages read and royalties. A small pipeline that loads those files into a database gives you title-level profitability and trends across marketplaces, especially when joined to advertising spend.

Advertising for books

Amazon Ads campaigns for books are available through the Amazon Ads API, so bidding, budgets and reporting can be automated like any other advertiser. This is often where the largest time savings are for publishers with many titles.
