Plugin or custom integration
Many shop platforms have an official or certified Amazon Pay plugin, and for a standard checkout it is usually the right choice. A custom integration makes sense for headless storefronts, subscriptions, marketplaces or unusual order flows.
The checkout flow
- Render the Amazon Pay button with a signed payload from your server.
- The customer signs in and selects an address and payment method on Amazon.
- Your site shows the final order with shipping and tax, then completes the checkout session.
- Amazon returns a charge permission you use to capture, now or later.
Authorisation, capture and refunds
For physical goods, authorise at checkout and capture when the order ships, so customers are not charged for items you cannot send. Digital goods and services can capture immediately. Refunds are issued against a captured charge, in full or in part, and should be triggered from your order system, not by hand.
Keys, environments and notifications
Integrations use API keys from your Amazon Pay merchant account, with separate sandbox and live environments. Store private keys in a secrets manager. Subscribe to instant payment notifications so declines, captures and refunds that happen asynchronously update your orders automatically.
Amazon Pay is available in selected countries and currencies, and terms differ between regions. Confirm availability for your markets first.
